Microsoft har på MSN Encarta annonceret, at de fra juni 2009 vil stoppe salget af Student- og Premium-udgaverne af deres digitale multimedieencyklopædi. Derudover vil hjemmesiden for encyklopædien fra oktober 2009 blive taget ned. Begrundelsen for denne beslutning skriver Microsoft i en speciel oprettet FAQ på MSN Encarta-hjemmsiden.

Encarta has been a popular product around the world for many years. However, the category of traditional encyclopedias and reference material has changed. People today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past.
